"We are going to miss that big smile.”

Carol van Rooyen, admin clerk at the GIB, still can’t believe Betta is going to retire from 16 years of bringing tea and coffee for the office.

Elizabeth van Rooyen, or Betta, is turning 64 this year and says it is time to rest. "I am just going to sit and relax and watch tv,” she laughs.

She is also going to look after her husband, Alfred. Her husband, Alfred, worked for the Irrigation Board for many years. Betta raised her sister, Margareth's two children, Rachael (37) and Bennie (36) as her own when their mother passed away when she was very young. They are nearby to help and Rachael's three children will keep Ouma Betta busy.

Before she worked at the GIB, she did housework in Patensie and Port Elizabeth, and worked as a packer at the Patensie Citrus Corporation.

Betta says she is going to miss her job to clean the offices and make tea and coffee for everyone in the office strictly at 8:30 and 10:30. "Everybody is always glad to see me,” she says with a big smile.

"I enjoyed it very much to work here. I am going to miss the friendly people. We were like family. I know each one's order off my head,” she says proudly.

Rienette Colesky, financial and human resources manager of the Irrigation Board says that Betta is the most important person in the office. Without her the staff cannot operate properly. Betta is a quiet and humble person and she keeps everyone happy.

"We will miss Betta. She is a beautiful person”.
