The name "Patentia" (currently "Patensie")
 is a Khoi word meaning "the resting place of
 the cattle".

About Us

Gamtoos Irrigation Board (GIB) is a Licensed Irrigation Board based in the town of Patensie on the fringe of the Baviaanskloof in the Eastern Cape, and has been a going concern since 1991. GIB is an Irrigation Board formed under the requirements of the (old) Water Act of 1956. GIB is going through the process of changing to a Water User Association (WUA), in terms of the requirements of the National Water act, or 1998.
GIB is managed by a board of Directors, headed by its CEO, Mr. Pierre Joubert. Pierre is backed up by an extremely capable team of committed and diligent staff members with a history of work excellence.
Since 1991, GIB has gained an outstanding reputation for managing large-scale labour-intensive infrastructure and environmental projects in the Eastern Cape. The Board’s expertise has been recognised widely and it has won numerous awards in this regard, contributing towards social upliftment and conservation.

GIB core services include:

• Water provision and management
• Management of irrigation quotas
• Water conservation and demand management
• Infrastructure management and monitoring
• Monitoring of dam levels and flood management
• Construction and civil engineering capacity
• Road rehabilitation projects
• Ecosystem services management

Various GIB staff members have been involved with the Working for Water (WfW) programme since GIB stared implementing WfW projects in 1999. Notably two Area Managers; Mr. Edwill Moore and Mr. Andrew Knipe started as WfW Project Managers in 1995 and 1999 respectively, before moving across to the GIB to manage various projects, and bring 30 years of combined WfW experience to GIB. More recently Mr. Justice Ncengane and Mr. James Jansen have progressed up within GIB as Area Manager and Assistant Area Manager (respectively) as the project footprint extended across the Eastern Cape.
Additionally other senior GIB staff including Ms Rienette Colesky, Mr Pat Oosthuizen, Ms Tisha Abrahams and Mr Fanie Bekker, have collectively 50-plus years’ experience with the administration and implementation of Natural Resource Projects for GIB.
