  1. Pollution of rivers

Many complaints were received lately about dumping of building materials and garbage next to and in our rivers in the valley. Hereby please take note that offenders will be reported to the Department of Environment Affairs. They are very strict these days on this kind of offence.

Kindly report to this office if you are aware of any dumping. The only alternative is Hankey dumping site.

  1. Buffelshoek Siphon

This siphon forms part of the main canal and is located between Hankey and Gamtoos Station. It is 1900mm diameter, about 65m long and maximum pressure of 4 bar. It is in a bad state and should actually have been replaced. Replacement is the responsibility of the Department of Water and Sanitation, however the last couple of years the excuse has always been lack of funding.

I would also like to bring under your attention that we have planned for a possible break. The site is very rugged and repairs could last as long as a week or even more.

  1. Besoedeling van riviere

Heelwat klagtes word ontvang oor die stort van rommel en vullis langs en in ons riviere in die vallei. Neem hiermee kennis dat oortreders aan die Departement van Omgewingsake gerapporteer sal word. Deesdae is hulle baie streng oor die soort oortreding.

Geliewe onmiddellik aan die kantoor te rapporteer indien u bewus is van enige storting. Die enigste alternatief is die Hankey stortingsterrein.

Hierdie siphon vorm deel van die hoofkanaal en is geleë tussen Hankey en Gamtoosstasie. Dit is 1900mm deursnit, sowat 65 meter lank en maksimum druk 4 bar. Dit is in ‘n swak toestand en moes eintlik al vervang gewees het. Vervanging daarvan is die verantwoordelikheid van Dept Water en Sanitasie, maar die afgelope paar jaar moes ons telkens hoor dat daar geen fondse is nie.

Ek bring dit onder u aandag net ook om daarop te wys dat ons darem voorsorg getref het vir ‘n moontlike breuk. Die terrein is net baie steil, so ‘n breuk kan tot selfs ‘n week of langer neem om daar te herstel.
